Benesse House – Tadao Ando
The Benesse House on Naoshima functions both as a hotel and as a museum. The two programs are so intrinsically linked that art is hung on the walls of each room, and rooms are literally located inside the Benesse House Museum (where guests can wander around after the gallery is closed to the public).
The Benesse House was one of the first structures that Tadao Ando completed on Naoshima, which is now home to a corpus of his work. His architecture interfaces with the topography of Naoshima through the use of off-form concrete to create monumental, subterranean stereotomic spaces. Fine timberwork contrasts against the concrete geometries and natural light is used throughout.
